VENICE
Definitely one of the must-see place one Europe’s tourist trail …. and you definitely pay for the privilege … unknown to us, the Short Film Festival had filled most hotels, pushing the price of rooms to 250 Euro per night (approx A$420) … So we took the cheaper option, and stayed in Mestre (a city 10 km south-west of Venice) and caught the public bus in …. As Venice is built on water, you cant actually drive a car anywhere into the city, so this was a good alternative.
The pigeons in San Marco piazza were everywhere, and very tame … and the Euro we spent on corn provided over an hour of entertainment, with the pigeons crawling over each other (and also scratching our arms) trying to get a mouthful (and surprisingly, we did not get any poo on us either) .
Great place to visit …. and we are both glad we did the trip, even though we have to backtrack 200km or so …. However the freeways in Italy are excellent, and at 135km/h, it didn’t take long to get into Slovenia.
