BACK TO LA into a NEW HOUSE

This week I flew back into LAX at 4pm ... and then moved straight into a new house ... a 3 bedroom “BeachHouse”, approx 50m from Newport Beach (above photo is view from balcony).
The place has a great feel ....and once the chaos of jet-lag/work/moving/other settles down, I know I will really enjoy living here.
Oh .. its got parking for 4 cars .... which helps .. now that I need to garage the Porsche (which I still haven’t taken out, as I need to organize insurance ... which is bit complicated on account of me not having a USA driving license .... (getting someone to insure me is not a problem, except most companies charge a lot if you have a an international license)

AROUND PORUGAL

We rented a car for few days, and drove around the southern coast.

LISBON

My last return to Europe for 2008 .... and being a long weekend (for me, due to Labour day in USA), we decided to head to Lisbon.
Lisbon/Portugal has been on my list of “Places to go” for quite a while.. and it did not disappoint.
I was little surprised how untouristy it was ... for a big capital city, it had a very laid back feel about it .. or maybe we were out during the hours of siestas.!?

Oh yeh .. and the food was great!!

PORSCHE 911 CABROLET

So I have said for a long time, that the next car I was going to buy will be a Porsche 911 convertible.....Well ... today I purchased a beautiful black 911 convertible.
I’m very excited, its one owner, 2000 model, low miles, (30k miles /48k km), black custom interior with red stiching, and considering its 8 years old ... it looks and drives like it just came from the showroom floor.

Since I’m flying out to UK again tomorrow night ... I will not get the opportunity to drive it for a few weeks .... but Im very excited ... and just like my yellow Ducati ... it is something that I have dreamed about for most of my adult life.

The long term plan is to own it in the US for 12 months (minimum time required by Aust customs for shipping cars younger than 15 years old .. ie. post 1993), and then ship it back to Australia, convert it to left hand drive .. and keep for quite a while.

Stay tuned .. as soon as I get back in few weeks ... and get opportunity to take it out .... I will post photos

HITTING A JACKPOT, AND YET STILL FEELING LIKE YOU LOST

So as most of you know ... I like to play poker....and my game of choice is Texas Holdem No-limit... which means you can bet as much (or as little) as you like, up to how many chips are in front of you (ie. No limit)
Well, I do it quite often while Im in the US ... I have most weekends to myself, and its a good way to kill an afternoon/evening .... yes I am one of the guys playing/listen to an IPod (nothing too agro ... don’t want to make too rash a decision, and I find mellow music most suited to poker ....U2, Massive Attack, ColdPlay, Pink Floyd, Radiohead .. you get the idea), and usually don’t play any more than 4-5 hours, as I find that after that time I get tired, and make impatient betting decisions.
Basically, when its time to go, its time to go (and thats around the 5 hour mark)

Anyway, today (Sunday evening, 17th August), I was sitting at a $300 table (you need that amount to start playing, and no more)... the blinds are $3/$5....

  • I have a stack of approx $700.

  • Jack (didn’t get the guys real name, so I made it up) has approx $800.

  • Kil (50 something little asian guy) has only about $200.

PRE-FLOP BETTING:
It was one of those hands, where after initial round of betting, there were only 3 players left, all paid $5 to play, and no real action (Pot $15).... I was on the button ... which means that I was first to bet.

FLOP:
  1. I check (I hit a straight) .... Remember, I’m the first to bet, with straight flush draw.... I figure there is only two others, need to suck them in.

  2. Jack checks : He also hits the same straight, except he has no other draw.

  3. Kil also checks.

TURN:

  1. I check ... I just hit a straight flush... cannot lose, but if I overplay it, I will scare everyone away, and get no actual winnings (no good having a great hand if nobody plays)

  2. Jack bets $15 (he still has the straight)

  3. Kil calls the $15 bet (he now has a flush, with a straight flush draw)

  4. I think about it, and figure might as well start building up the pot, and raise to $45

  5. Jack calls

  6. Kil goes All-In (raises my $45 bet by approx $140)

  7. I go All-In (raise Kil’s bet approx $550), there is no way I can lose this!!

  8. Jack thinks about things, realizes that with no hearts in his hand, his straight is no good, and drops out.

RIVER (Whole table is yelling for a 5 of Hearts):
Well Kil is All-In, so there is no more betting... he hits his straight flush 3,4,5,6,7 of hearts... but I have a better hand .. and I win (some $200) !!

Ok ... so that is a interesting hand ... but so what?

Well, the Casino I play at (Hawaii Gardens) have a $100,000 poker "BAD-BEAT JACKPOT" which runs at certain times of the day .... and there is a RED light spinning when the jack pot is “ON”.

Conditions for Jackpot:
Minimum hand of Full House of Aces and 10’s (eg. A,A,A,10,10) with player having a pocket pair, and losing to a Four-of-a-kind or better.

Well Straight-Flush losing to another Straight-Flush qualifies for the JACKPOT ....and at the time, THE RED LIGHT WAS FLASHING!!!!

So I play here regularly, and know of the jackpot ... but right now I’M IN IT.... hundreds of people start gathering around the table.... Hi-5s flying, hand shakes, pit-bosses start checking cards, checking video footage, all the admin stuff.

I know that its the actual losing hand that wins majority of the Jackpot (ie. NOT ME!!!) .... didn’t really know how much, but as things progress, I find out that I also get a share.... so the Jackpot was split:

  • $60,000 to Kil
  • $20,000 to me
  • $4,000 to each of the other players on the table (ie. Reminder of $20,000 split 5 ways .. there were only 7 people on the table)

So a great result for everyone .... more Hi-5s flying around .... and everyone pretty stoked about their unexpected win-fall.

Now here is where things in USA are different:

  • The recipients of the Jackpot have to declare it in their Income Tax as income (and get taxed), except you can start writing-off any gambling losses against the win
  • The players, started tipping the dealer/pit bosses and were throwing around discussions of tipping out 5% (fuck that .. Im not giving away $1000 for nothing)... Kil gave the dealer $1000, and $500 to be shared amongst the pit bosses .. I gave $200 to the dealer, and $225 to the others .... I figured that was plenty .... and don’t really agree with the whole notion of tipping!! .. true to their word, all the other players gave $100 to dealer and pit-staff, but I figured that they did nothing, so they can give away 5%
  • They were going to take the tax out of my share immediately, because I only had my Australian driving liscence as ID (and therefore considered a non-resident), and eventually after they checked my Social-Security Number (yes I have a SSN because I now work for the US arm of my UK employer), they cut me a check for the full amount.... its going straight in the bank (like I said before .. you have to know when its time to leave)

So thought I’d share this with you .... it is probably the most exciting Poker hand I have ever been in .. and by far the most profitable... except I kept feeling that even though I won the hand, I some how came off second-best (by some $40,000) ... but then again $20k is nothing to snub your nose at!!!

In hindsight, it was lucky that when I (and Jack) hit the Flop, we didn’t get into a betting race, because we would have most probably knocked Kil out of the game ... and then there would have been no jackpot.

Morale of the story:

  • a WIN is a WIN
  • and know how to quit while your ahead

AROUND IRELAND

We had a rental car, and decided to drive around to explore a bit of the countryside.... Its easy to see why Ireland is called the “Emerald Isle” ... it is very, very green.

IRELAND - DUBLIN

On my last trip back to the UK, Pamela and I decided to visit Dublin for a weekend.

It was drizzly and overcast, and to be honest I found the city a bit uninteresting.... but there was always the Guinness factory ... which to me was the highlight.

On top of the Brewery there is a 360 degree observation deck/bar ... and a great place to enjoy a pint (or two).

5.4 EARTHQUAKE in OC

Today I experienced a 5.4 earthquake.
I was at work (in a business meeting).. and the whole building started to shake ... one guy jumped under the table ie. Duck & cover drill.
The consensus in the room was that it was the biggest any of them have experienced (and most lived in California most of their life) ... I was quite excited!!!!

REST OF 2008

So its going to be a busy "rest of 2008":

  • Im flying to UK next week (first week in August)
  • I'll be back there again first week in September
  • My folks are coming down for 6 weeks in September
  • Im flying to Beijing in late October
  • Back to Australia for 2 ½ weeks in November
  • Xmas/New Year break .... Undecided ... but it looks like I may be hosting Sully, Máté, Gasper, and anyone/everyone who wants to pop in and hang out in Newport Beach .. and then New Year’s in Vegas.

I just signed a lease for a 3 bedroom beach house (which is large enough to sleep 20 ... I’m not kidding).... so this is an open invitation to all my friends ... everywhere in the world.
YOU ARE ALL INVITED TO NEWPORT BEACH for Xmas!!! .. RSVP asap!! (cause if no one is coming .. I’ll probably pack up .. and disappear for 3-4 weeks somewhere in central America, Bahamas, or Cuba).

Pictures of the new place to follow (I move in 8th Sep 2008)

BEIJING ... HERE I COME

It seems that every year my Adelaide buddy, Máté, celebrates his birthday in different corners of the world.
Last year it was in Florence, Italy .... and I was supposed to go (had all the flights booked) ....but at last minute, I had to change plans due to the work placement on the LA project.

Well this year its Beijing (October 18 – 26th) , and I just booked my flights!!

There is going to be a large Adelaide contingent ... so it should be a great week .... nothing concrete planned yet .. but Máté did mention a trip to Shanghi ...and there is this wall .... about which I keep hearing al these great things.
Im going to have to organise a Visa ... which will be a pain ... but I think I will leave this till September .. after all the Olympics chaos... plus I will be back in OC for 6 weeks prior to the China trip ... and I still need my passport for next two UK trips.

BACK DOWNUNDER

I have just booked return trip to Australia for 2 weeks in November:

Im really looking forward to seeing my parents/friends (and their kids .... Charlie, Sophia, Louis, Connor/Hudson .... and any othere that popped out while I have been away).

By then it will be 10 months since I was last in Oz..... little longer than I expected ..and I was hoping to be back earlier .... but with work, and seeing the world, sometimes you just cant do everything.

Im also thinking of coming back for 2 weeks or so in March 2009 ... and maybe try to plan it to coincide with Easter
